| Growing up in New York City, Angel Martinez is no stranger to the big city’s hustle. On the contrary, he embraces the challenges his work and life bring him using them to his advantage. A Bronx native, he was introduced to music at an early age through his older brother. Since that introduction, he has worked long and hard to position himself in situations where his effort and opinions are valued by peers and fans alike. Today he has a plethora of projects to focus on daily, even hourly, but it hasn’t always been this busy. “I started off as an intern at Sony’s IT department…” Angel recalls. “After a semester there, I realized that sitting behind a computer screen all day was not what I wanted to do. I left that department and switched over to radio promotions.” After a year at Sony, Angel landed yet another internship in 2002 – this time at Interscope Records in the A&R department. Focused on a career in music he juggled his internship between work and school. Eventually his determination and hard work paid off, and in 2003 he landed the job of marketing coordinator at Interscope Records. Unfortunately, after 3 months there, Angel was laid off and had to find yet another way to position himself. Far from deterred, Angel only looked forward into new avenues. He combined his previous experiences into a new internship at G-Unit records. Starting out as an assistant to Diana Richie in finance, he quickly attained a position at the label and was promoted to product manager shortly after for DJ Whoo Kid, Young Hot Rod, Spider Loc, and Young Buck. It was now a different ball game. The projects going through his hands gave the eager entrepreneur endless opportunities for new ventures with G-Unit. Terminate On Sight in 2008 was Angel’s 3rd project as product manager, and so far the experience has been incredible. Currently, Angel is the personal assistant for DJ Whoo Kid as well as executive producer of G-Unit Radio on Sirius Satellite’s Shade 45 channel. Quite different from his tasks in the office, the radio show requires a diverse “hands-on” approach. Responsible for booking the talent that is featured on the show, Angel’s duties extend as far as co-ordination, show maintenance, and even recording, and sometimes co-hosting on air. Featuring interviews with icons Donald Trump and Mark Ecko, actors Samuel Jackson, Jet Li, Terrance Howard, Pamela Anderson, artists such as Lindsay Lohan, Linkin Park, Babyface, Kanye West, Jamie Foxx, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, athletes like Floyd Mayweather and Tony Hawk among many others. The show is 10 hours of non-stop music and hilarity with a host of music exclusives, appearances and call-ins. G-Unit radio continues to grow its international fan base always keeping the listener in mind. “I want to play a major role in the music industry, and influence those coming after me,” Angel confesses. “I enjoy working hard, because I know it will all pay off. I love my job and I am luckier than a lot of other people to be able to work and grow as an individual doing something I truly enjoy. It’s really a blessing.” As far as his solo projects go, Angel is focused on creating a new t-shirt line and launching his consulting firm. The line will feature concepts surrounding an independent consumer, more focused on individuality and exclusiveness, rather than mass product. His consulting firm is still in the works, with a launch date slated for early 2009. The work only gets heavier from here on, and Angel Martinez is always prepared and ready for his next battle. |
